About Us

University of Moratuwa Tamil Alumni Association – Canada (UMTAAC) was created following the first and second annual informal get together of Tamils who studied at the University of Moratuwa (UoM), Sri Lanka and currently living in Canada. These informal get together were held in Toronto in August 2001 and September 2002 respectively.

The initial purposes of these get together were to continue our close contacts with each other, to share our educational/training/working experiences among us, and of course to have fun. Before these get together, an informal softball cricket team was formed by a group of UoM Tamil Alumni in association with an external club and played some tournaments in Toronto in June-July 2001. The third annual get together was held at Downsview Dells Park, Toronto on August 03, 2003. In this get together, an initial executive committee was elected in order to make UMTAAC as a formal organization.

Our objectives are:

  1. To gather at least once a year in Canada
  2. To share experiences voluntarily in getting jobs/education/training in Canada among us for mutual benefits
  3. To initiate Financial Assistance Program (FAP) for needy Tamil Students at the University of Moratuwa
  4. To strengthen our roles in the development of our country and community, and
  5. To initiate some voluntary activities in Canada.
